Author and Holy Ghost Prep Alum Mom Lisa Fernandez Visits HGP Creative Writing Class
On December 10, Mrs. Fernandez, mother of Tim '08 and Matt '14, also author of "The Shoebox," spoke to our Holy Ghost aspiring creative writers, sharing her expertise about writing and publishing.
"You are already doing what it takes to become a writer," she said. "All you have to do is write, write, write. Write every single day."
She talked to the students about being good observers and noticing what is going on around them. She said, "Observing people's emotional state will enrich your characters and their characterization."
The students were shocked when she told them that she told her story from the point of view of a man. They asked how could that be? How could she possibly take a male perspective? She answered she has two sons and husband, and she believes emotion is emotion. She also encouraged them to write about what they know, but not limit themselves to only their own experiences.
It was a riveting hour of conversation with a wonderful, generous creative writer. Thank you, Mrs. Fernandez, for sharing your knowledge with our Holy Ghost boys.
