Summer Reading Lists

Summer of 2013 :  ALL STUDENTS

 

For the Summer of 2013, you are required to read at least three books or packets of readings.  Students in AP English classes are required to read more. 

Students entering Algebra 2, Analysis and Honors Analysis will have a summer assignment which should help refresh your algebra skills.  In order to access the assignment you will need to sign up for the appropriate course on Schoology.com.  The course codes and additional information are available on Mrs. Carmine's website at: holyghostprep.org/carmine

At each grade level, you will be assigned 2 readings for specific classes.  For rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the 3rd reading is your choice from the list below.  The reading assignments are listed below by Class Year and by Subject Area.  The readings of choice with a faculty mentor are also listed below (readings posted, selected, and assigned during May, 2013)

Please also note that the Assessments that are done within specific classes will be counted as a graded assignment for that class.  The assessment that is completed with your chosen mentor will be recorded on your report card as a S (atisfactory) or U(nsatisfactory).  Do the reading!

  • Assessments for Reading #1 will be done during the first week of school in English classes. 
  • Assessments for Reading #2 will be done during the second week of school in appropriate classes. 
  • Assessments for Reading #3 will be done during the third week of school during a special
  • Assessment/Assembly period.  Be prepared!

Incoming Ninth Graders (Class of 2017): 

  • Principal's Letter on Summer Reading May 2012 and two (packet readings)*
    • Spiritan History and Mission   (Assessment during Orientation Day on August 23; bring e-journal)
    • Science Readings: Assessment during week of September 2-6. Bring reading e-journal with you to announced assessment: 9th Grade Packet of Science Readings (Reading #1; Reading #2
  • Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist (9th grade), English Classes:  Assessment during week of August 27-30.  Bring book  with you to English Class during first week of school

*also on wristband given out at Freshman Welcome Night on May 15, 2013

Sophomores (Class of 2016):

  • Tobias Wolff, Old School  (10th Grade English Honors Classes); August Wilson, Fences (10th grade Non-Honors English classes):  Assessment during week of August 27 - 30
  • Victor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning (All Religion Classes) and Reading Packet in Social Studies,
    Language and Science (10th  grade—various) :  Assessments during week of September 2 - 6.
  • Reading with Faculty Mentor from List Below (assigned during May); Assessment September 12.

Juniors (Class of 2015):

  • Kent Haruf, Plainsong  (11th grade, English Classes):  Assessment during week of August 27-30.
  • Erik Sass, Will Pearson, Mangesh Hattikudur, The Mental Floss History of the United States: The (Almost) Complete and (Entirely) Entertaining Story of America (11thgrade, Social Studies Classes) Assessments during week of September 2 - 6.

Seniors (Class of 2014):

Below is the selection of choices for Reading Choice # 3 for all current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. 

Except for students in AP Language, AP Lit, Portfolio, and Advanced Music, all students must choose one of the faculty on this list,

and inform the faculty member of your wish to work with them with the summer reading. 

These readings will be assessed during the third week of classes in September, in addition to the common readings listed above.
