New members: (those who have never run cross country at Holy Ghost Prep before)

Anyone is welcome to join our team, regardless of their conditioning or talent level. Team members must be willing to work hard with a positive attitude and contribute to the team through their dedicated practice and meet attendance.

Returning members: (those who have run cross country at Holy Ghost Prep in a prior year)

There is a consistent and high expectation that returning members value their participation in our sport enough to properly prepare themselves to be contributing members of our team. Foundational distance running during the summer must be done to be successful during the eight week competitive season of cross country. Therefore, the following are required of returning team members:

1)     Successful participation in the 3200m Time Trial on the first night of practice at HGP. Success is measured by running at least as fast as in the previous year. Slight adjustments are allowed for athletes who fall within a small margin of error, as the goal is not to be in your best 3200m shape on day one, but rather to be able to run near your best with only a solid aerobic foundation.

2)     Successful participation in the 5.3 mile Timed Distance Workout on Wednesday of the first week of practice. Success is measured by running at least as fast as in the previous year. Slight adjustments are allowed for athletes who fall within a small margin of error, as the goal is not to be in your best 5.3 mile shape on day three, but rather to be able to run near your best with only a solid aerobic foundation.

3)     Successful participation in a team scrimmage (when one is scheduled) or the ability to do assigned practices (distance and pace) with teammates of near equal ability as measured by past performances. While teammates have varying strengths, a solid foundation of aerobic running during the summer will allow all to work at a commensurate level during early season training.

Athletes unable to meet at least two of the above three requirements will be required to attend a daily morning workout (8am at the Tyler Craft Center Entrance before school starts; 6am at the fieldhouse if needed once school begins) in addition to the regularly scheduled evening practices in order to remain on the team. Double workouts end once an athlete has worked himself into appropriate shape through this additional work. Please note that in extreme cases double workouts could continue through the start of school.
