The Office of College Guidance

Holy Ghost Prep students enjoy a strong academic foundation and a myriad of opportunities to engage in meaningful extracurricular endeavors; by the time they reach their junior year, our students have—in the classrooms, on the fields, on the stage, and in service—begun to discover their voices, their passions, and their place within the community. Although the college process has the potential to be confusing and intimidating, our students are well prepared to enter the process with HGP’s experienced College Guidance team, which equips each student and his parents with the right questions, information, and tools to navigate the process smoothly.  Use this website guide to assist you as you explore your options.

The college admissions process can be time-consuming, frustrating, and sobering. It has several components: searching, visiting, narrowing down your choices, and finally, applying. Ultimately, it is an exercise in learning how to make decisions and an important process of self-realization—a period of learning about oneself. Conversations with your friends, teachers, parents, and counselor will all help you to work on your list of options but it is important to remember that the bulk of the work is yours. When you begin to meet with your counselor you will be asked to think seriously about yourself before you even begin to research colleges. Self-evaluation is vital if this is to be a successful search—and will help you to answer many of those college application questions later.  College is more than the courses you take: it is the career preparation you receive, the friends you make, the interests you develop, and the memories you will keep for the rest of your life.  Our goal is to help each student identify a range of colleges that would serve as the best-fit schools for his unique abilities and needs.

What makes the HGP college guidance process unique is its individualized nature.  The exceptional counselor-to-student ratio at HGP ensures that each student will be well known by his counselor; additionally, each student and his parents enjoy easy access to counselor support whenever necessary. We find the process of getting to know our students, helping them to know themselves, and working together with them and their families to move to the next step of their education to be truly exciting, and we are honored to be part of this important passage in the lives of our students and their families.  Once a student has identified a group of colleges, our staff will guide them through the admissions process so that, in the end, each student will have the benefit of college choices best suited for him.

The Office of College Guidance wants to minimize the confusion created by the college selection process by answering many of the questions which surface each year. The key to successful college selection is good communication between the student, the parents, the school counselors, and the colleges. If you are ever in doubt, please do not hesitate to ask. In the course of this journey that is the college application process both students and parents experience a range of emotions.  HGP’s College Guidance team stands ready to help with all dimensions of this process, from the mundane to the life-altering.
