Indoor Track Experiences Tragedy and Triumph at State Championships
Team superhero Christian Lupica '11 found the flu was his Kryptonite. After a season of top state and US ranked performances, the flu took Lupica out of medal contention in both his signature event, the high hurdles, as well as the 200m. In the 4x200m Relay, Brandon Davis '14 needed to substitute for Lupica. With personal best performances from almost every competing member, the team still ran the state qualifying standard, but was unable to fully compensate for the loss of the fastest member.
Undaunted by the tragedy in the sprints, the 4x800m Relay of Christian Kardish '14, Michael Spielberger '11, Ryan Horgan '12, and Sean Dooling '11 improved upon their season best performance by over 10 seconds, shocking the state competition and finishing fourth, the highest ever by an HGP relay in the indoor state championships. The team's time of 8:02.58 is the third fastest time ever run by an HGP 4x8 relay and is ranked 20th in the country as the team continues onto nationals in two weeks.
Congratulations to all the hardworking team members who helped make this season successful!
Lupica leads Indoor Track to Record Performances
Christian Lupica ’11 placed second in the 60m High Hurdles in the Kevin Dare Invitational held at Penn State University on Saturday, January 22, 2011. Lupica also placed 5th in the 200m Dash in a state 7th best time, ran leadoff on the 4x200m Relay, and anchored the 4x400m Relay.
The 4x200m Relay composed of Lupica, Justin Stillwell ’11, Zach Philiph ’12, and Joe Gdovin ’11 placed 6th in a new school record time of 1:32.77, improving upon their own record from January 8th of 1:33.43. Stillwell also improved his open 200m time to 23.52, 33rd best in the state.

HISPANIC GAMES SUCCESS!

The team qualified seven more athletes to the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches’ Association Indoor Track & Field State Championships to be held on February 26, 2011, at Penn State’s Horace Aschenfelter Track & Field Complex.
Ryan Horgan ’12 qualified individually in the Mile Run, joining Christian Lupica ’11 in the High Hurdles. Both are currently ranked 5th in the state in these events. Additionally, Christian Kardish ’14, Horgan, Mike Spielberger ’11, and Sean Dooling ’11 qualified in the 4x800m Relay with the second fastest time run so far this year in Pennsylvania.
