Brendan Mahoney '13 has been selected at the Valedictorian for the Class of 2013.  Brendan will speak to the graduates and guests on Saturday, June 1 at Commencement.  Conner Smith has been selected by his classmates as the Salutatorian for the Class of 2013 and will offer the welcome at the Baccalaureate Mass on Friday, May 31.

The Team Tennis State Championship Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 14th at 11:30am at the Legacy YTE Complex in Philadelphia, PA.  This first round match-up is between District One top seed HGP and District Twelve top seed Archbishop Carroll HS.  The winner advances to the quarterfinal round at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday, May 17.

The Boys Lacrosse District One Championship Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 14th.  HGP will play at Avon Grove High School in the first round at 7:00pm. 

The District One Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet will be held at Coatesville High School on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18.  HGP's qualifiers are Patrick DiIorio in the Javelin, Chistian Kardish in the 1600m and 3200m, and Christian Kardish, Brandon Davis, Joe Iwasyk and Patrick Dineen in the 4x800m relay.

Information about the individual state championship tennis tournament and the District One Baseball Tournament will be available later in the week.

Discus , Javelin - Patrick DiIorio '13. Patrick DiIorio (Sacred Heart University) was named the Outstanding Field Performer.

HGP ninth graders Nate Fiorvante and Brandon Fritze won the 2013 PIAA District One Tennis Doubles Championship defeating the team from Lower Moreland.  The two advance the State Championship Tournament at the end of May.

The entire tennis team also qualified to the District One Team Tournament and is seeded first in this year's competition.

Holy Ghost Preparatory School Honors the 46 Years of Service of Longtime Teacher, Administrator and Coach Ted Grabowski and Outgoing President Father Jeffrey T. Duaime, C.S.Sp. ‘76 at an Assembly and Reception on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 2:00pm

Holy Ghost Prep will honor Mr. Ted Grabowski’s 46 years of service to the school. Grabowski retired from his full time responsibilities in January 2013. Over his career he served the school as a teacher, coach and guidance counselor.

The school community will also honor outgoing President, Father Jeffrey T. Duaime, C.S.Sp. ’76. Fr. Duaime is assuming full time responsibilities as Provincial Superior of the United States Province of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit.

Ted Grabowski arrived at Holy Ghost Prep in September of 1967. He taught mathematics, general science, English and physical education from 1967 until 1982. Grabowski served as the school’s Director of Guidance and then Director of College Guidance from 1981 to 2013. He coached the varsity baseball team from 1968 to 1998 and has continued to coach baseball at the school in different capacities since 2000. Throughout his career at HGP, Grabowski has coached soccer, basketball, moderated the National Honor Society, school newspaper and run a successful baseball camp for 37 years. Ted Grabowski served in the United States Army, has a bachelor’s degree from LaSalle University and a master’s degree from Rider University. He and his wife Nancy have four children.

Fr. Jeffrey T. Duaime, C.S.Sp. ’76 has served as the school’s President since 2002. During his tenure, Holy Ghost Prep has enjoyed tremendous success and growth. In 2003, Fr. Duaime dedicated a renovated Firebird Fieldhouse. He also oversaw the complete reconstruction of the school’s one-hundred year old chapel after a devastating fire nearly destroyed the entire main school building in December 2009. Under Fr. Duaime’s leadership, the school has thrived in a multitude of areas including increased financial aid and scholarships to students, completed an extensive strategic planning process and helped to strengthen the school’s academic programs and community service outreach. In July 2012, Fr. Duaime assumed the position of Provincial Superior of the United States Province for the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and will be moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in June 2013 to serve in this position full time.

The school community will gather in an assembly in the Firebird Fieldhouse on the campus of Holy Ghost Prep on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 2:00pm. Christopher Marchok (HGP ’83) will speak about Ted Grabowski. Ryan Abramson (HGP ’94), the Director of Admissions and Communications, will speak about Fr. Jeffrey Duaime. The assembly will be followed by a reception for the faculty and honoree’s families in the Sonnenberg-Keeble library hosted by the school’s principal Mr. Jeffrey Danilak.

Members of the entire school community - alumni, parents, students, friends - are also invited to a special event to honor Ted Grabowski at the Philadelphia Phillies game on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Holy Ghost Preparatory School announced today the appointment of Rev. James P. McCloskey, C.S.Sp. ’70 as the school’s next President. McCloskey, a 1970 graduate of HGP succeeds Rev. Jeffrey T. Duaime, C.S.Sp. ’76 who will assume full time responsibilities as Provincial of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit – USA Province.

“Holy Ghost Prep is a remarkable place,” said Fr. Duaime. “I join the entire school community in welcoming Fr. McCloskey as he returns to HGP as President and pray for the Holy Spirit to continue to bless our great school as we transition into the future.”

Fr. McCloskey first served at Holy Ghost Preparatory School as Headmaster and then President from 1990 until 2002, when he was appointed Vice President for University Relations at Duquesne University. In 2003, he was elected Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. He had served in that post for one year when he was elected to the General Council of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Rome, the worldwide headquarters of the Congregation, with special responsibility in the area of education. In 2009, Fr. McCloskey was named the first Vice President of Mission and Identity at Duquesne University.

Fr. McCloskey is a 1970 graduate of Holy Ghost Prep. He earned a Master of Divinity Degree from the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, in 1980. He was awarded a Master of Theology degree from Weston School of Theology in 1988 and a Master of Education degree from Boston College in 1995. His Ph.D. in Education was granted from Fordham University in 2002.

"It is an honor to be appointed President of Holy Ghost Prep," said Fr. McCloskey. "I am excited to work with an exceptional faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends."

Fr. McCloskey will meet with members of the HGP community on campus on May 8, 2013. He will officially begin his tenure as President on July 1, 2013.

Chapman played basketball and baseball at Holy Ghost Prep. He then went on to La Salle College where he was on the freshman basketball team and played four years on the baseball team.

After graduating from La Salle in 1975 with a degree in social studies education, he was hired as a social studies teacher at his alma mater and also became the JV baseball coach and freshman basketball coach.

Chapman got to be on the bench when the Firebirds lost to Midland by one point in the state Class AA title game in 1976. Holy Ghost had won the state Class A title in 1974.

As head coach, Chapman’s Firebirds twice reached the state Class AAA finals. In 1999 Holy Ghost lost to Blackhawk and in 2004 had a two-point loss to Moon.

The HGP forensics team won the 2013 State Championship at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA on March 23, 2013.  Second place was Upper St. Claire High School and Third Place was Danville High School.

The HGP group will do some spring cleaning of the parish grounds and parish food pantry.  They will also be bringing a signficant amount of food with them to help replenish the soup kitchen supplies and donating $300 from the Annual Christmas Charity Ball.

On Palm Sunday, the group will participate in the annual Palm Sunday Procession and visit local churches and conclude their trip with mass at St. Mark's Chuch.

HGP was among the schools recognized as leaders in Coaches Versus Cancer Fundraisers in 2012-2013 at the annual breakfast held at the Palestra.  The Philadephia area mens' Division 1 basketball coaches host the event each year.  HGP has participated in the program for more than seven years and holds programs throughout the year to raise money and awareness for cancer research and education.

The ice hockey team will play at the Wells Fargo Center in the 2013 Flyers Cup AAA Championship Game at 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.  The team defeated Father Judge High School 2-1 in the semi-final game.

HGP, seeded second in the tournament, will play top seeded LaSalle College High School in the Championship Game.

Tickets are all sold at the Wells Fargo Center for $7.

The game will also be broadcast live on the Comcast Network and CSNPhilly.com.

The tournament, sponsored by the NHL Philadelphia Flyers, is the premier scholastic showcase of the top Philadelphia area hockey teams.

The ice hockey team will play Father Judge High School in the AAA Flyers Cup Tournament on Thursday, March 7 at 6:40pm at the Northeast Skatezone.

On Sunday, March 3, 2013, HGP will welcome the 125 members of the Class of 2017 and their families to campus for the annual Welcome Mass and Breakfast.

As part of the celebration, students that were awarded scholarships will be recognized during a ceremony with HGP President Fr. Jeffrey T. Duaime, C.S.Sp. '76 and Principal Mr. Jeffrey Danilak.

Our new students will also be introduced to their Unum Leaders.  Unum is the HGP orientation program.  These upperclassmen will be a resource throughout the orientation process and throughout freshman year to assist the Class of 2017 as they navigate their new experiences at Holy Ghost Prep.

Mass begins at 10:30am in the historic Chapel of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, followed by the scholarship presentations, the gathering of the orientation Unum groups throughout the campus and breakfast in the dining hall.

HGP music students were honored with Music Director Beth Vilsmeier at a school assembly on February 20th in recognition of their participation in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia All-Catholic Chorus, Band and Orchestra. Seniors Sean Jordan, Vincent Pillinger and Marc Connuck were also recognized as four-year participants - a distinction awarded to only twelve students in the entire Philadelphia region in Chorus and Band.

Congrats to Harvard National Invitational Finalists Sean Jordan and Mike Dobuski who took second place in Duo Interp and Sean Jordan who also took fifth in Humorous Interp. Robert McDonough (extemp) and Romsin McQuade (dramatic) both made top 12 and Nick Berube (Dramatic) placed in the top 64.

The Harvard tournament is one of the most challenging of the year, welcoming students from throughout the United States.

Also this weekend at the University of Pennsylvania, the forensics team placed many competitors in the final rounds. Joe Zampirri placed second in Dramatic Performance. In Duo Interp, George Hibbs and John Henry placed third and Greg Price and Antonio Gil placed fourth. Greg Price also placed eighth in Declamation and tenth in Oral Interp. Antonio Gil made a second final in Oral Interp and placed fourth.
