English

Ever mindful of the Spiritan tradition, the English Department strives to promote the moral, intellectual, and spiritual development of our students through their study of literature and composition.

In the words of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley: "A man, to be greatly good, must imagine intensely and comprehensively; he must put himself in the place of another and of many others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own. The great instrument of moral good is the imagination; and poetry [literature] administers to the effect by acting upon the cause" (from A Defense of Poetry).

As English teachers we aspire to challenge our students to empathize with, and to think and to write critically about the diverse human issues explored in literature.
