Mathematics

In mathematics, emphasis is placed not only on problem solving and analytical skills that are required for a successful career in science, technology or other allied subjects, but also on those aspects of the subject that touch upon those values that help to develop a strong and discerning character.

Therefore, our philosophy is two-fold: inculcating in our students a genuine love for the scholarship and critical thinking which will help them to solve some of life's problems and developing good ethical standards and Christian values.

Use of Technology

The Mathematics Department strives to incorporate graphing calculators and computers throughout the curriculum. Graphing calculators are used to illustrate, develop and reinforce algebraic and trigonometric concepts. Calculus classes utilize the calculator for graphic solutions to problems. The statistics applications of the graphing calculator enable students to avoid tedious calculations and to make predictions using regression techniques. Computer software is used to help students visualize geometric ideas and augments the geometry text to provide additional topics. Internet applications allow students to discover resources that are not available in the confines of the classroom.

All students should have a Texas Instruments TI-84 Graphing Calculator for use in mathematics. Students will be able to use this calculator all four years at Holy Ghost Prep.
