The HGP Difference

Our College Guidance Office has a truly unique programs in place to make those dreams a reality. Some of the innovative programs that differentiate HGP’s College Guidance approach include:

HGP’s Leadership Externship Advantage Program (LEAP) program: Nearly 50 Holy Ghost Prep juniors a year take advantage of the school’s Leadership Externship Advantage Program (LEAP). Through this program, juniors with an interest in pursuing a particular field of study get real-life experience in the work environment while shadowing and developing a relationship with an alumnus in the Holy Ghost Prep community. The alums host a LEAP student at a job site, where students can get up close and personal, and have hands-on experience on what it is like to be an accountant, structural engineer, district attorney, or cosmetic surgeon. Annual spring college bus tours: The College Guidance Office offers college tour trips each spring for current sophomores and juniors (in past years, they went up to New England) and saw a bunch of schools; this spring, they are taking a 4-day, 3-night college tour of schools south of here. This trip will include visits to James Madison University, University of Virginia, Duke University, Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina, High Point University, University of Richmond, University of Maryland, and Loyola University of Maryland.  The trip will take place in March. The ultimate goal is to have a New England schools bus tour one year and a Southern schools tour the next. So that if a student takes both tours—one as a sophomore and one as a junior—he’ll visit nearly 20 colleges before his senior year even begins.

The process starts early at Ghost: As we mentioned, Holy Ghost Prep student is assigned a college counselor in the second half of their freshman year. They help these students pick their sophomore year courses, and start to build a bond with them. Parent information sessions throughout the year: Holy Ghost Prep parents are able to stay informed about the college search process through morning “Coffee Talk” meetings, which are information sessions hosted almost monthly by the school. The College Guidance Office also holds virtual and/or in-person information session on evenings—covering topics like how to interpret standardized test scores and use them to direct next steps in testing, participating in athletics at the college level, financial aid and the steps for applying, and, for senior parents, an evening covering all the logistics of the college application process and our procedures at HGP.
