2019 Season Outlook: The Firebirds figure to remain at the top of the BAL charts this spring. That’s because Mike Meistering’s team returns a slew of all-league performers both on the track in All-BAL runners Tony Carbino and Jarett Zelinsky and All-BAL hurdler John Gasiewski as well as in the field events with pole vaulters Matt Ginnetti, Jacob McDonald, and Nick Evans, and thrower Adam Lawall.
2019 BAL Champions!
The Track & Field team captured the Bicentennial Athletic League (BAL) championship beating defending champion Christopher Dock in second, followed by Lower Moreland finished third. The win was was a true team effort with 19 team members scoring. Seniors led the way with Burton Carbino, Nick Evans, John Gasiewski, and Jacob McDonald, accounting for 69 or the teams 145 points. Sophomore Elliot Puckett and and junior Brendan McManus also contributed a significant number of points. Other seniors competing in their final high school meet were Andrew Beck, Nick Polidoro and Andrew Plunkett who factored into the scoring. Christian Paul set a personal best in the 800m in his final meet. Senior Jarett Zelinsky was unable to compete due to an injury, however he was a key contributor to the team’s undefeated season in the BAL.
Seniors Carbino and Gasiewski have been on a roll over the past few weeks. Gasiewski finished first in the 300m hurdles at the Montgomery Memorial Invitational on May 2nd with a district qualifying time and followed that up by placing 1st in the same event at the BAL championship. Carbino recorded the the 13th fastest time in the state in the 800m at the Neshaminy Invitational breaking the meet record for that event. He followed that up with a 1st place in the 800m at the BAL championship and also led the team to a 1st place finish in the 4x800.
Carbino (Duquesne University) and Zelinsky (West Chester University) recently signed a National Letter of Intent to compete at the next level.
Joining Carbino and Gasiewski at districts will be the 4x800m team which includes Mitchell Feyl (junior), John Horgan (sophomore), Alexander Borda (junior), Elliot Puckett and Brandon Dorsey (sophomore).
2/6/19 - Congratulations to the 4x800 meter relay team composed of Jarett Zelinsky '19, Burton "Tony" Carbino 19, Mitchell Feyl '20, and John Horgan '21, who last Saturday qualified to the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor State Championships! The team ran a few seconds under the qualifying guideline and are currently 15th in the state as of their February 2nd performance. They join the 4x400 meter relay team of Zelinsky, Carbino, John Gasiewski '19, and Antonio Camacho '21 (currently ranked 8th) as well as individual qualifier Zelinsky in the 800 meters (currently ranked 7th). The PTFCA State Championships will be held this year at Penn State on Sunday, February 24.
More Success for Indoor Track & Field over Christmas Break
1/6/19 - Over the Christmas Holidays, the Indoor Track & Field Team continued to challenge at or near state level performances. Led by Jarett Zelinsky '19, the 4x400 meter relay team defeated teams from six states in winning the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival relay event held on Staten Island on December 30. The team composed of John Gasiewski '19, Tony Carbino '19, Antonio Camacho '21, and Zelinsky ran close to state qualifying in winning the event, garnering 1st place medals and commemorative hats. Earlier in the same meet, the 4x800 meter relay team composed of Tony Carbino '19, Mitchell Feyl '20, John Horgan '21, and Zelinsky medalled in sixth place. On the day before, Zelinsky was accepted and competed in an invitational individual 800 meter race at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York City. He medalled in 7th place, the third runner in the race from Pennsylvania, running a personal best and top 5 time for Pennsylvania. On that same Saturday, a separate group of team members also garnered medals at Lehigh in a Track & Field Coaches' Association Meet: Matthew Ginnetti '20 placed 1st in the pole vault, Jacob McDonald '19 medalled in the 60m High Hurdles, and Elliot Puckett '21 medalled in the 3000 meter run.
Currently, Zelinsky is 5th in the state in the 800 meters, and with his help, the 4x800m relay is 10th and the 4x400m relay is in the top 20. Best of luck to all team members as they continue to work hard and improve.
