2024 season preview -- Holy Ghost Prep rowing

In her fifth season, Allison Boehm has taken the Holy Ghost Prep rowing program to amazing heights. She has produced six current collegiate rowers and has coached HGP’s top boat to nationals the past two years running. Here is a 2024 spring season preview of HGP rowing.

The Holy Ghost Prep lacrosse team is a hungry and competitive squad with strong leadership provided by team captains Bobby Williams, Matteo DiCiccio, Michael Holt, and Michael Malpezzi.

Holy Ghost Prep will add volleyball as a varsity sport next spring

The Holy Ghost Prep athletic department is excited to announce that the school will add volleyball as a varsity sport in the spring of 2025. To introduce the sport to the Holy Ghost Prep community, all interested HGP students are invited to four upcoming free volleyball clinics this spring.

HGP sophomore bowler Karl Hussey is on a roll

On February 6, Holy Ghost Prep sophomore Karl Hussey made history by bowling what is believed to be the first perfect 300 game in school history in a match against Neshaminy High School at Bowlero Bristol.  

 

HGP inducts nine new 2024 Athletic Hall of Famers

Firebirds using hockey to serve   

During a post-New Year’s Spiritan immersion trip to Pittsburgh, the Holy Ghost Prep ice hockey spent quality time with the students at the DePaul School for Learning and Speech, a school for speech and hearing impaired students in grades K-8. Area writer Rick Woelfel chronicled the trip in this "Hockey Happenings" article. 

2023-24 season preview -- Holy Ghost Prep basketball

Tom Heston ’12 moves over one chair on the bench to replace his mentor Tony Chapman ’71, who retired after 45 years of coaching Holy Ghost Prep basketball with a mind-boggling 928-351 record. Heston will build his first Firebirds squad around two returning starting guards, 6-2 junior Adrien “Ace” Varella (pictured) and 6-foot senior Gavin McLaughlin. 

Tim Devine’s Division One dream comes true

Holy Ghost Prep senior Tim Devine has been the starting varsity soccer goalie for the Firebirds for the past four years. And like anyone who has played the game, Devine has dreamt of playing collegiately at the Division One level. HGP’s cross-country team wins fourth straight District One title  

The Holy Ghost Prep cross-country team captured a fourth straight PIAA District One Class 2A cross-country team title on October 27 at Lehigh University. The Firebirds had four top-10 finishers in the District One race and all four were district medalists: senior Papakojo Danquah (fourth place), junior Daniel Perez (fifth place), senior Maurece Jean-Brian (ninth place), senior Brendan DiEnna (10th place).

Holy Ghost Prep's Acosta is putting out fires on, off baseball field

Isaac Acosta is a three-year starting first baseman on the HGP baseball team. He is also a volunteer fireman nearing the end of a six-month fire academy course that will enable him to become an interior firefighter upon graduation in late June. Tom Heston ’12 is named HGP’s new basketball coach

After an extensive search, Holy Ghost Prep realized that the best man for the job was already on campus and hired Tom Heston ’12 to be HGP’s next head varsity basketball coach. Heston has taught chemistry at Ghost and has been a varsity assistant basketball coach at his alma mater under the legendary Tony Chapman.

HGP’s track and field team continues to improve

On April 15, the HGP track and field team competed in the Bensalem Invitational and continued to improve with 12 personal records out of 18 individual performances. The sprint relays fared well, with the 4x400 meter relay—composed of junior Papakojo Danquah, senior Jack Evans, senior Jack Frain, and junior Maurece Jean-Brian (pictured)—placing second. 

Conlin gets his call to the Hall

Holy Ghost Prep athletic director Craig Conlin was one of 15 new inductees into the City of Philadelphia chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on April 18. 

Holy Ghost Prep receives $1.25 million RACP grant

On April 4, Holy Ghost Prep president Gregory J. Geruson '79 announced that the school will receive $1,250,000 in state funding from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to aid in the cost of the construction of the school’s new Duaime Athletic Complex.

Gump Whiteside retires as HGP’s ice hockey coach 

Gump Whiteside, the head ice hockey coach at Holy Ghost Prep for the past 15 years, has decided to retire from coaching. He will remain at Holy Ghost Prep as the assistant director of facilities and assistant director of athletics. (photo courtesy of Robert Barnes) 

Holy Ghost Prep coach Tony Chapman ’71 retires from coaching

Holy Ghost Prep’s legendary coach Tony Chapman, one of only six high school basketball coaches in Pennsylvania history to reach the 900-win plateau, has decided to retire from coaching. Chapman finishes his illustrious coaching career at Holy Ghost Prep with an impressive 928-351 record.  

Holy Ghost Prep officially partners with YMS Soccer

Holy Ghost Prep has entered into a multi-year partnership with Yardley Makefield Soccer (YMS), allowing the highly recognized Bucks County soccer club to run some of its youth programs on the school’s brand-new Duaime Athletic Center synthetic turf field beginning in the fall of 2023. 

Peter Cerenzo hired as HGP’s new athletic trainer   

Peter Cerenzo MS, LAT, ATC, CES, became Holy Ghost Prep’s new athletic trainer, effective February 6. In addition to working in clinical settings, Cerenzo’s professional experience includes working with student-athletes at the Division I and Division III college, high school, and junior high levels.

Mel Lindsey is leaving his legacy at Ghost

The Northeast Times profiled HGP senior basketball player Mel Lindsey, the son of a high school coach who hits the books as hard as he hits the glass for the Firebirds. A Maguire Scholar, Lindsey maintains a 3.16 grade point average in the classroom.

Holy Ghost Prep hoops team is playing its best basketball

The Holy Ghost Prep varsity basketball team is now 8-6 on the season—thanks to its current four-game winning streak. With seven games left in the regular season, the senior-laden Firebirds are seeded seventh in the current PIAA District One Class 5A rankings. 

Early riser Ian Hendrix set for his senior year

The 2022-23 Holy Ghost Prep ice hockey team will be led by its 10 seniors, including this year's captains Landon Stout, Brady Baehser, and John Seravalli.
