Parent/Player/Coach Communication

The purpose of this document is to create a clear understanding of the communication between coaches, players and parents.  The HGP athletic office has developed these guidelines to benefit the athletic experience of every student athlete.  The safety and wellbeing of our young men is of paramount importance to all of us within the Holy Ghost Prep community.

Communication between coaches, student-athletes, and parents:

Holy Ghost Prep believes in an education-based athletic program.  We believe athletics can teach our student-athletes incredible life lessons like communication, teamwork, reliability, sportsmanship, trust and grit.  Our athletic programs are based on hard work and respect for our student-athletes, teams, coaches and our competition. As parents, when your son becomes involved in our athletic program, clear communication between your son and his coach is very important.  First, we want to empower our young men to communicate with his coach directly should an issue arise.

Pre-season communication:

  • Dates, times, locations, equipment needed are all items that would be discussed in pre-season communication between players and coaches.
  • Team requirements, i.e., special equipment, summer/off-season workouts, etc.
  • Expectations our coach has for your son as well as the squad

In-Season Communication:

  • Student-athletes should communicate with their coaches directly if he feels there is an issue.
  • Student-athletes are expected to attend every scheduled practice. If they miss practice, it could affect their participation in games.
  • Pre-game or post-game is not a good time for players or parents to approach a coach about an issue.  Please respect the 24 hour rule.
  • Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance by the players

Postseason Communication:

  • Postseason individual meetings between the coach and player
  • Specific goals and skills each player needs to work on in the offseason

Appropriate matters parents can discuss with coaches:

  • Your son’s emotional and physical development
  • Ways to help your child improve their skills
  • Concerns about your child’s grades, behavior or conduct
  • College aspirations

Role of the Athletic Office:

As your son becomes involved in the athletic program at Holy Ghost Prep, they will experience some of the most rewarding moments in their lives. It is important to understand that there will also be times when things do not go the way you or your son wishes. At these times, discussion between your son and his coach is encouraged.  Again, please empower your son to speak with his coach first.

The Next Step...

There are situations that deem a conference between the coach and parent. It is important to follow this procedure to help promote a resolution to the issue of concern:

  1. Call or email the coach to setup an appointment

If the coach cannot be reached, email or call the Athletic Office at 215-639-2102 ext. 220.

  1.  An appointment with the Athletic Director

If you feel an issue has not been resolved after a discussion between the student-athlete, coach and parent, please call to set up an appointment with Craig Conlin, Athletic Director, in order to discuss the situation. The coach may be present at this meeting to share his/her input regarding this situation.

We hope this information makes your student-athletes, as well as your own experience as an involved parent, one that is positive and provides an enjoyable tenure here at Holy Ghost Prep.
