Model UN
Think globally. Think Holy Ghost Prep’s Model United Nations program.
Established in 2018, Holy Ghost’s Model UN (MUN) team already has a storied history of excellence rooted in Spiritan tradition. Competing exclusively at competitions with students from across the globe, HGP MUN has earned the following distinctions:
-
4 Team Awards
-
6 Individual Champions
-
33 Combined Individual Awards
Our Objective
HGPMUN encourages a young man to combine his unique gifts of knowledge and communication through a realistic simulation of the present-day United Nations, gaining exposure to international relations and some of the world’s best and brightest students.
Forward Thinking
Through a combination of faculty members, alumni coaches, and students leadership team comprised of the most dedicated students inspired by the Spiritan mission, HGP’s Model UN program cultivates its exposure to international studies in an effort to improve its surrounding community and nurture students’ sense of community, global vision, and commitment to service.
The "MUN Magic Five"
As one of Holy Ghost Prep’s fastest growing organizations, Model United Nations can be summarized by five unique ideals that can provide learning experiences to every young man involved:
Global Thinking
Prioritizing an understanding of whatever lies immediately beyond Holy Ghost Prep’s campus is essential to the program’s ongoing success.
Collaboration
While being a confident speaker or prolific writer is crucial, being able to apply those skills in a team-based setting is what distinguishes Model UN from adjacent programs.
Service
Only can applying knowledge of international contexts to local communities can our young men truly learn how to make a tangible impact on their environment.
Engagement
We have a saying that “other teams hate us because not only do we know how to win, but we know how to have a good time.” Being exposed to students or conference leaders from unfamiliar backgrounds allows our young men to associate themselves with Model UN on a nearly personal level.
Academic Excellence
Not only does Model UN foster a student’s communication, writing, and research skills; Model United Nations is equally associated with greater academic success inside the classroom and access to some of the world’s best colleges and universities.
Competetion Venues
Although the Model UN team’s conference schedule is re-evaluated on an annual basis, HGPMUN has enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the following universities and conferences since its inception:
- Cornell University
- National High School Model United Nations Conference
- American University
- Yale University
- Princeton University
- Pennsylvania State University*
* - Denotes conferences that are no longer on the HGPMUN calendar.
Service
Think Service. Think Holy Ghost Prep's Model UN Program
A crucial part of the Model UN experience, HGPMUN is proud to orchestrate numerous service projects annually. Our two primal service opportunities for participating young men include:
-
Trivia Night
-
Model UN Workshop Series
-
“In-House” General Assembly Simulation
-
“In-House” Crisis Committee Simulation
Trivia Night
Hosted during the fall semester, the HGP Model UN Trivia Night is a growing success that serves as one of the team’s most impactful sources of funding. Above all, however, guests always report having a fun night with friends and family, taking chances on the 50/50 and raffle baskets, and having a blast hearing some laugh-out-loud trivia questions.
Model UN Workshop Series
Unique to the HGP Model UN team, local high schools are welcome to participate in the team’s simulation of a United Nations General Assembly (GA) on Holy Ghost Prep’s campus. A General Assembly typically refers to one of the larger functioning organs of the United Nations, such as the Special Political and Decolonization Committee or Environmental Programme.
"In-House" General Assembly Simulation
Equally unique to the HGP Model UN team, local high schools are welcome to participate in the team’s simulation of a United Nations Crisis Committee on Holy Ghost Prep’s campus. A Crisis Committee refers to situations in which the United Nations establishes a temporal subcommittee that targets a specific issue for any specific timeline, such as a World War II War Cabinet that seeks to find an escape from ongoing conflicts.
