Campus Ministry & Service

retreat

As the only Spiritan high school in the United States, a core component of Holy Ghost Prep’s educational mission is to form young men morally, intellectually, and spiritually in the Spiritan tradition. With the Spiritans - the Holy Ghost Fathers - as a model for us, our school community strives to have one heart and mind in Christ. We work under our mission statement below and by our school's motto:

"Cor Unum Et Anima Una"

Whether it's staying among the people of the Dominican Republic, caring for the homeless at the St. Francis Inn in Kensington, or helping a local charity, we challenge students to see themselves as servant leaders who respond to the needs of others with compassion. As part of that ongoing effort, Holy Ghost Prep formed the Ministry Team in 2021, a formalized partnership among the school’s Spiritan Chaplain (Father Dan Sormani, C.S. Sp.), the chair of the Religion Department (John Fitzpatrick ’89), and the school’s director of Campus Ministry and Service (Mark Whartenby).

The formation of the Ministry Team will strengthen HGP’s Spiritan identity and will allow the school to benefit from the collective wisdom of Whartenby, Fitzpatrick, and Father Sormani. The team will work collaboratively to pursue new community service opportunities, evaluate our current Religion Department class offerings and look for ways to strengthen the program, educate the entire community (faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni) about what it means to be Spiritan, and look for ways to increase student involvement and ownership in future school-wide liturgical celebrations.

The goal is to seeks to engage all members in the Holy Ghost community through the ministries of word, worship, service, and community, as we grow in living our lives in accord with Christ's greatest commandment:

"To love God above all and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves."
