How to give Securities
Giving appreciated securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds) is a convenient way to support Holy Ghost Preparatory School, while gaining tax advantages. You receive an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock on the date of the gift, provided you have owned the securities for more than 12 months. Most donors avoid the capital gains tax otherwise due on the sale of the securities. You are urged to consult your tax professional before making gifts of appreciated stock.
The value of your gift of appreciated securities is the mean of the high and low price of the stock on the date one of the following occurs:
Securities and a signed stock power are hand delivered or mailed (date of postmark) to Holy Ghost Preparatory School
Electronically transferred securities arrive in an account in the name of Holy Ghost Preparatory School.
How to Give Securities
When the security is held by your broker or commercial banker (electronic transfer):
Notify your broker by letter that you want to give securities to Holy Ghost Preparatory School and send a copy of the letter to the Development Office, or you can call the Development Office to notify us that a stock gift is in the works.

You or your broker may contact Matt Dwyer, Executive Director of Development, at 215-639-2102 (ext. 203) for assistance at any time, including instructions on how to direct a gift to the Holy Ghost Prep Annual Fund or to a particular HGP need.
Hundreds of corporations match the charitable contributions made by their employees, directors, employee's spouses, or retirees. You may double or even triple your campaign gift by checking with your company's Human Resources Office to see if they participate in a matching gift program. If they do, simply request and complete your company's matching gift form and include it with your gift to the School.
Making a gift of personal property can enable you to share a personal item with others while receiving tax benefits. Examples of gifts of property include tickets to events, rare books, art work, or even laboratory equipment. Tax treatment for a personal property gift will differ depending on whether the gift's use is related to Holy Ghost Prep's exempt purpose.

Life income gifts can provide you and/or your loved ones with an income for the duration of your lives or for a specific number of years
Charitable lead trusts can be used to transfer assets to a loved one with a significantly reduced tax liability.
Bequests, retirement accounts, and other testamentary gift plans can allow you to make a more substantial gift than you may have thought possible.
How It Works For Your Business
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania offers a unique opportunity for businesses (and qualified individuals) in the state to reduce tax liability by contributing to registered scholarship organizations such as Holy Ghost Prep. Businesses apply through the state to receive up to a 75% tax credit for a 1-year commitment and up to a 90% tax credit for a 2-year donation commitment.
How Businesses Can Apply
The tax credits are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting July 2nduntil the tax credit dollars are used up. These tax credit dollars are typically distributed on the first day of application (July 2nd). Businesses are encouraged to apply on July 2nd.
The one-page application is now available on-line from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development at www.newPA.com/EITC.
Is my business eligible?
Businesses authorized to do business in Pennsylvania who are subject to one or more of the following taxes can apply for EITC:
- Corporate Net Income Tax
- Capital Stock/Foreign Franchise Tax
- Bank Shares Tax
- Title Insurance & Trust Company Shares Tax
- Insurance Premium Tax
- Mutual Thrift Tax
- Malt Beverage Tax
- Retaliatory Fees under sec. 212 of the Insurance Company Law of 1921
- Personal Income Tax
May 15 - June 30 – Business applicants who have fulfilled their 2-year commitment and wish to reapply to renew their 2-year commitment.
May 15 - June 30 – Businesses who are in the middle of their 2-year commitment.
July 2 – All other businesses including initial applicants and those applicants wishing to submit an additional application on top of their previously submitted 2-year commitment.
Important Additional Information
Once a business is eligible and received their “approval letter”, the business has sixty (60) days to submit a donation to Holy Ghost Prep. An approved company must provide proof to DCED within 90 days of the notification letter that the contribution was made within 60 days of the notification letter (Holy Ghost will mail an EITC tax letter to your company upon receipt of the gift). No matter which way you choose to give to Holy Ghost Prep, please know that your support makes a difference and is always greatly appreciated.
This is probably the easiest and most convenient way to give. You can designate a certain dollar amount from each paycheck to be donated to the Holy Ghost Fund. Submit your information online, or print the payroll deduction form and submit it to the Advancement Office in Spiritan Hall.
If you prefer, you can make a one-time gift with your personal check or credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.

Giving a gift is a personal decision, so please feel free to designate your gift to the school, program, scholarship, or area that is important to you.
How will my gift be recognized?
All faculty and staff gifts made prior to the end of the fiscal year (June 30) will be listed in that year's HGP Annual Giving Report published online. Requests for anonymity are honored.
